i like how this one turned out except for one thing...the characters...they look so out of place and pasted in...its annoying

Looks pretty serious, whatever they're discussing. Twilight and... Rainbow? A bit hard to tell with the lighting.

No, I like it. It's just the nature of the lighting in the scene that the colors are a bit hard to decipher.

My first thought was that there was a giant mushroom cloud on the horizon behind that ridgeline that Derpy and Twilight were taking shelter from, and Derpy was apologizing to Twilight for causing it. "Oops, my bad..." :)

The characters do look *slightly* out of place, they have noticeably sharper lines and more detail than the background. But it doesn't jump out at me very strongly. Maybe adding a few more fine lines to the cliff face behind them would make them blend in better? The color schemes are a good match already.

they look like they fit to me...do you always match your surroundings? best example is a science team in large orange jackets out in the middle of an arctic desert. they kinda pop out don't they? lol

I can see what you mean. Maybe you could try dulling their colours, so they don't stand out as much against the cliff? That wouldn't let you focus on the characters but it would be less jarring. :<
